Sleep Psychology

Our Psychologist, Ms Marni Ahmer specialises in treating sleep problems and consults remotely for About Sleep. Ms Ahmer can provide individualised plans that treat primary and secondary insomnia in adults and the behavioural sleep problems that commonly affect children and adolescents.

There are many effective non-drug treatments for Insomnia and Behavioural Sleep Problems. Cognitive Behavioural Treatment (CBT) strategies are very effective in resolving insomnia by treating the cause of the insomnia with long lasting results. Other behavioural strategies and education about sleep have also been shown to be effective in resolving sleep problems in adults, adolescents and children.

Psychologists can assess the sleep difficulties being experienced and provide treatment plans which include:

  • CBT treatments for primary and secondary insomnia

  • Behavioural treatments for night awakenings, insufficient sleep and sleep routines

  • Treatment for circadian rhythm sleep disorders (such as bright light therapy)

  • Treatment for anxiety and/or depression associated with poor sleep

  • Education about sleep and helpful sleep practices

  • Sleep difficulties associated with CPAP use and compliance

  • ReTimer Glasses for body clock problems

Patients are responsible for payment of fees at the time of consultation so it is important to ensure that your Mental Health Care Plans has been fully approved if you plan to claim Medicare rebates.
